The WMC Alps trip - this year Netty suggested camping in Mayrhofen in Austria - for fun for all the family. Here's a glimpse of what we got up to...

What a venue - just walk across the road to head up the Penken cablecar, to get both sport climbing, and kletterstieg action, at Knorren.

ree

Tom and Guy on the pinnacle where there's climbing up the front, and kletterstieg around the back.

ree

And Tom and Andy now on the main face at Knorren.

ree

aswell as a multi-pitch adventure for Guy and Caz ........

ree

and just 1 more pitch to go - if you know, you know! 😉

And all round this valley, such beautiful views!

ree

The campsite itself had all amenities; swimming pool, restaurant with live bands etc, and, of course (??!!) - our own herd of goats!

ree

Rain or shine we could find wonderful local things to do - here's Guy and Netty heading up the Zimmereben kletterstieg - also accessed by just crossing the road from the campsite.

ree

There is nowhere else where I have ever been able to explore UNDER a glacier, but the Hinterlux glacier is very unusual, in being fixed to the rock with permafrost; so you can walk, slither, and even get on a boat, 20 m under the skiers on the piste above!

We then headed slightly further down the valley, for my birthday treat of the Talbach kletterstieg - with the river, waterfalls, and cable bridges to entertain all.

Here, "littlest" Tom shows the adults how it's done - we couldn't chicken out now!

ree

And Guy - well, whatever he's doing - he's not chickening out..............

ree

and littlest Tom and Becky have a chuckle, but disguised by the roar of the waterfall

ree

The birthday girl is all smiles as she heads over to Guy .....

ree

..... until the wobbles really get going ...... focus on the cable!

thinks - "honestly, I'm too young to die"!!

From the Ahorn cablecar in town, the Ahornspitze summit can be reached with panoramic views

ree
ree

by Netty, Ash, Guy and Tom

sounds like "Bostin bites" on the summit

And those waiting below, at the top of the cable car, are also busy!

ree

But snowier conditions when Kris and Ollie headed up a few days later

ree

When it's snowing on the tops, it's raining down below, so rafting we go - Ash and Sarah poised for action.......

ree

then canyoning for Ash .........

ree

and "not so open water" swimming for Caz

ree

then Guy joins Tom, Caz and Ash........

ree

And Andy is lowered into the bubbling cauldron

ree

With a big jump for lil' me - supposedly climbing helps you cope with heights, and I guess this is either "falls practice" or a variant of deep water soloing?

ree

Evenings also involved intense activity - here a game of "Cards against Gravity", with Caz displaying the effects of a whole jug of water, but littlest Tom appears to be really calmly pacing his beer.

Darcy is the real hero, managing to laugh despite his broken ribs! Although, "young / FAMA (= fast approaching middle aged)" Tom, is trying to pretend he can't hear the accordion versions of some rock classics by one of the local bands

ree

Now to do some downhill biking in the Gerlos valley - cablecar + bike up - and terrifying descents (with a few crashes) down- what fun!!

There are also more sedate bike options - more fitting to what Guy refers to as my "foothill" bike, and George, Andy, Guy and I circuited the lake

ree
ree

and yes - of course I had a swim too - and it was on purpose!

The Gerlos valley also has this magnificent rockface, and the Gerlossteinwand klettersteig beckoned Netty, Caz and Tom back out onto the rock ....

ree

and up we go .....

ree

ree
ree

but even higher still - littlest Tom decides he's going to leave school to be a paraglider after this experience

So, we camped, climbed, biked, rafted, canyoned (if that's a verb?), hiked, swam, flew; as well as hanging out together and having a really good laugh. Come and join us on the next one!
